Blacksmithing Classes

Instruction or independent work with blacksmith Peter Clark. No experience necessary, beginning and intermediate skill levels encouraged.

Maximum capacity is 6 students per night. $40 for 3 hours. Save $5 on your total by pre-paying for two classes. Save $10 when pre-paying for 4 classes.

All ages are welcome. Participants under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent who is also a paid participant. All tools and materials provided or bring your own if you have them.  Email for more details or to sign up!

Classes are structured to provide 6 hours of hands on instruction over the course of 2 days and will be held at the forge at The Red Pig Farm. Private group instruction at your location is also an option.

Tools and materials provided. No experience necessary. Complete beginners encouraged to attend!

No experience necessary

Beginning classes focus on basic blacksmithing skills:

  • how to build and maintain coal and coke fires
  • hammer use
  • anvil use
  • basic smithing techniques

Tools and material provided.

Students will make a small project to take home.




All class participants will need to bring:

  • leather work gloves
  • safety glasses
  • ear protection if desired
  • sun hat, sunscreen (we will have sun protection in the form of trees and a shade canopy but you may be in the sun at times)
  • water bottle to stay hydrated
  • all necessary tools will be provided however feel free to bring any blacksmithing tools you may already own



Peter Clark has over 30 years experience working in metal and wood. He teaches beginning through advanced blacksmithing classes in La Grande, OR during the spring and summer months. Private lessons are available. Please email for more information.
